Yes, Rent was a big thing in London too.

The recent Channel 4 drama "It's a Sin" captured a lot of that period. It starts quite gently, but I couldn't watch the end because it was too close to people I knew. It was made by Russell T Davies who reinvented "Doctor Who", so it's very well written.

it was all good how we lived until it suddenly wasn't. and one got very few clues on picking a partner.
