I've noticed a massive increase in people sleeping on the streets in the last couple of years. Some speak very little English, others have told me the  "help" available from the state isn't for them. I knew a guy who found the homeless shelter too intimidating. He was simply too afraid to use them and took his chances sleeping in a burned out factory. Other people don't meet some arbitrary criteria and get nothing from the government.

I wish they'd make use of all the housing and buildings that stand empty. There are a few schemes where people get to live in a building for free/very cheaply in exchange for looking after it. But most of that is organised online. I seriously doubt you could get one of those if you were on the streets.

The question I have is this. Why can our country take OUR tax dollars to help people in countries all over the world, but do little to nothing for Americans that are homeless and starving? What's wrong with this picture?
I especially hate the way our returning soldiers are treated. They risk their lives fighting for the rich and powerful to get richer and more powerful, yet are left to live on the streets and get terrible health care for any injuries they have from fighting for these SOB's.

I have no problem with helping others, but dammit, take care of our own 1st. It's disgusting. I wonder what they'd do if we all stopped paying taxes and refuse to go fight their wars for them. It goes to show you that our government doesn't give a rats behind about us and just use us for THEIR benefit.

America and everything it stood for, is done.

Favourite TV show ever has to be Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror, although I havent seen Season 3 yet.

Love G.O.T and recently watched Narcos, about Pablo Escobar, which was excellent.

I'm also an SVU fan. The premiere tonight  was very close to home considering everything that went down in NY and NJ last week-end.

I've openly admitted my love for trashy tv so here it goes!  Big Grin

Real Housewives of NY sadly ended, so now I'm getting caught up on OC.  I'm really not feeling that new Kelly chick. I'll KISS, but she is a true mean girl.

I didn't know that My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding was still on. I loved the original UK series. (I'm sorry to our UK friends).  I usex to love TLC shows- I can't wait for Long Island Medium to start again. Not because of mediums- I just like Teresa Caputo.

I'm hoping this season I'm not the only Dancing With The Stars fan. Admittedly at this point I'm mostly watching for the dancers.   So far Rick Perry is painful to watch, and even his wife looked embarressed by his Quick Step.  Vanilla Ice. Well, at least Queen and David Bowie make money every time his stupid knock off song is played.  Holy smockers though! That chick from One Tree Hill has legs into next month and can actually dance!

AH,
You are far from alone. Love SVU. I started to get addicted to Dancing with the Stars and the Voice. The only Housewives series I have seen is the Beverly Hills one. Love Ray Donovan, too. I tend to watch some comedies due to the stress from the job. Addicted to The Big Bang Theory and 2 Broke Girls.

I also still try to catch, Grey's Anatomy (even though McDreamy is gone), The Blacklist, waiting for Scandal to come back, if it is. I love to watch American Pickers, as I think that would be a hard, but cool job.

It would appear that I am a trash t.v. Addict, now that I look at this post. I guess there are worse things to be!!!! R.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift; that’s why they call it the present.

Btw, I love Absolutely Fabulous. My son and I called them the two drunk ladies.

I am somewhat the patsy character. Just somewhat. The motorcycles and the fact that has not had food since 1973.

But, my son is an Uber christian and scientist. So, in that area, I am akin to Edwina.

I just don't have funds to have fun as they do. Love that show.

Gold rush new episode comes on tonite. woo hoo!!

Patsy is the star if you ask me. I crack up tho every time Eddie falls out of cars.
I think my favorite episode was the one where Patsy fell asleep in Eddie's kitchen with a cig that burned everything. I cracked up when she lifted her charred head off of the table. LOL

I am soooo looking forward to seeing the movie. I really hated to see that series end.

i loved that episode. the visit to maracca? sp? where patsy sold saffron into slavery. where both patsy and edwina warn saffron its very hot, so be prepared and they pass out.

also love the mother character. she is always watching.

the one where the daughter gives a report on DNA and patsy and edwina have changed it to a party tape from their younger days, where everyone is rushing thru the school is awesome as well.

I just love them all. Roseanne Barr attempted to purchase the rites to abfab for the US. It did not work out.

oh, oh, when they hire two men to have fun with. and in lieu of breath spray, one man offers the other man some spray to make him able to perform shall we say. so, his tongue instead is erect.

U gotta love british humor to love them, IMHO. but they rule. but so does eddie izzard. brilliant comic from yemen whom performed mostly in UK.

Yes, British comedy can be an acquired taste. A lot of it's corny, but AbFab is hilarious.
What the hell is with Bubble? What a wack job LOL.

I like Izzard too. I have a couple of his shows on dvd, but my favorite is Dressed To Kill. Never could get into Benny Hill tho.

I crack up at the CRAZY things Bubble always wears. I think that's the only thing funny about her.
The one person on the show that I don't like is Marshall's loudmouth wife. Can't think of her name, but she gets on my nerves.

Dammit, now I feel like goin' and watch the dvd's again LOL. I'm gonna have to go on ebay in England and see if the new movie is for sale there. I'm gettin' impatient LOL.

In the UK the justification for spending money on overseas aid (beyond the humanitarian one), is that it is a form of "soft power". I suppose that where we have invaded certain countries we have a moral obligation to help put things back together (although ISIS has shown we haven't done a good job). Certain things make total sense to help abroad, like when there was the ebola outbreak. I think that stopped it hitting America and Europe. Ideally I'd want to do both, help at home and abroad.

I liked Michael Moore's idea that politician's sons should be the first soldiers sent into battle (his Trumpland film/show is now on YouTube, which is quite interesting whatever your politics). Anyway I'm sure it would make them think twice before declaring wars. I agree that any government has a sacred pact to look after their soldiers. In the UK the medical side is taken care of because we have a national healthcare system. But I know soldiers who have really struggled afterwards. If you have been in combat, then coming back to being a civilian is tough for some.

Back to TV... I think older British comedy (e.g. Benny Hill) is harder to understand. I agree Eddie Izzard is brilliant (and I'm very honoured to have met him in person - wearing pink lipstick and a beret to match). UK sitcoms have much shorter runs than in the USA because they tend not to have a team of writers, but maybe one or two people behind it.

My recommendation is "Black Books" (2000-2004) set in a bookshop with an owner who hates customers, new worker who is very enthusiastic (played by Bill Bailey, a great comedian whose other work people might enjoy), and their friend from the shop next door. It is surreal but also slapstick.

If you like darker comedy, then try "The League of Gentlemen" (1999-2002) which is set in a fictional village where there are some very strange goings on. A small cast play a set of grotesque characters. I find it hilarious. But comedy is very personal. We all agree on tragedy, but what is funny for one person is totally unfunny to the next.

All the best,
barq
