You want two or more main growing tops on each plant. That makes them grow out to the side instead of straight up and skinny. Bending down the tips and holding them in place with twist ties does the same thing and can be done in flower stage.
There are lots of techniques, such as sea of green in which you take rooted cuttings and put them in like 4 per square foot. They grow up to about 24" at harvest and you get a better yield per square foot. The worst way to grow is letting them get tall. A 6' plant at harvest may have 2' of good buds, 1' of skimpy buds and 3' of ragged stuff you don't want. Outdoors its different because the sun gives so much light it can penetrate 6' or more.
