i hear you on that, sir! i have one doctor who i see really frequently and have been seeing for about a decade who doesn't talk to me like i'm a total idiot. over the years i've "proved" to him that i'm relatively intelligent about my disease and have the capacity to read and evaluate actual medical/scientific literature, and i'm not just web md-ing everything!![]()
I recently fired my Doc at the VA.
I called up 5 minutes later and asked for a new one. They said sure...would I consider a female Doctor. Now I know the female species has more empathy and kindness than their male counterpart so I was quick to say yes.
When I first met her she showed me notes on the computer screen that said "he doesn't like doctors".......being true, I didn't mind that it was in my records (in fact, it made me laugh).....and it sure showed me the trust and honesty of my new female doc. I liked her immediately. Later, having lab tests done, the technician noted my new doc and said...."do you know you have the best doctor here?" I stuck up for myself and hit the jackpot.....not the first time I learned that lesson, but it's always good to have reminders.
Talk about trust......I even told her I was self medicating (I think your/my doc should know everything).......she gave me a slight warning, listened to my reasons and accepted that I was responsible for my own decisions....didn't even make notes in my records........I wish all of you luck in your search for a smart doctor you can trust and have confidence in
wow, sounds like you really hit the jackpot with the new doc! (and for my own personal reasons, it always makes me happy to hear that there are good physicians working for the VA. i come from a long line of men who've served and know that it isn't always a sure thing that you're going to get fantastic medical care there, unfortunately.)
i'd also like to commend you and agree with you about the being honest with your doctor sort of thing. i wasn't always, but after having spent so much time in and out of hospitals and seeing so many doctors due to chronic illness, i finally realized that being truthful about everything is the best plan. and i've also found that so many doctors are quite appreciative of the honesty.
cheers to good medical care and good health!
