I'm so very sorry for your loss. My last dog was a Blue Heeler and unbelievably tough. She was incredibly sweet with children, and would 100% kill any adult who broke into my house when I was gone. We backpacked thousands of miles and she always stayed close, never chased bears. It has been 4 years and I still can't bring myself to get another dog, but I know I'll adopt another eventually. I'm sure one day you'll think of it too, but it just takes time unfortunately, and it is the slow kind of time.
