Lol - celts17 - 12-29-2016 So I know a lot of folks use lol, but at the start of the internet, back in the newsgroup days, I'm a huge sports fan, all the jerks would use it-plenty people whom I love use it to so not saying lol = jerk just carifying-, so I got really annoyed by it. Now with emoji's I like to use them in moderation of course, but I can see too much emoji use bothering folks too. There was a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode where Larry jokes about Lol. So using hahaha may be more annoying, oops sorry. Anyone have an opinion on this? Kinda random, but I have always wondered since 95 about it. Please keep this mellow as honestly just curious. Thanks
RE: Lol - celts17 - 01-05-2017 cool thanks, actually when the internet was young, I found it was used more like you are an idiot, so lol, in other words the person was laughing at you not with you. But you are right, now it seems benign. Funny it upset a person so much they would delete posts, that made me chuckle. peace RE: Lol - G.Elias - 01-05-2017 A mod deleted anything posted with LOL in the text?Bet they were great folk to be around eh?(shakes head in disbelief).Which forum Audrey? RE: Lol - G.Elias - 01-15-2017 Sorry for late reply Audrey,oh no not et again,i hope his ship has sunk to the deepest part of davy jones locker, his place was/is just full of blabbermouths,no lols?Sounds like a proper miserable boderline neo-fascist. RE: Lol - celts17 - 01-19-2017 OK thank you for the answers; I guess this post has pretty much run its course. The one thing I will add is very rarely, I find an email may upset someone, when it's Point is to do just the opposite and possibly help a situation through humor. In such situations, sometimes you have to mark a sentence with some sort of Mark that helps the reader know it's a joke or you are being sarcastic but in a harmless way. I don't know if the latter is possible I'm just tired and having a tough time searching for the right words here. So I tend to use :-) faces or a peace sign or something like that as I mean a smiley face or a wink face what is more harmless than that. As I said in the early days of the Internet LOL was used, at least in my experience on anonymous news groups, as a way of others trying to act superior to the people whose post they were commenting. And often they didn't explain why, they just made a rude remark and then said LOL, so that's why I had my issues with it early on, but now they have obviously faded. OK pretty much done I just want to explain my side after hearing you guys comment. I just hope the Internet starts approaching its potential, as there is so so much good it can provide in terms of communication and mutual understanding, this site is a great example. But all good things in time. ✌️ |
