The song is about Syd Barrett on one level. You know he went crazy while with the band, sadly. Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett was heavily damaged by a drug designed to act as a neurotransmitter: (The dark side of the 1960's.)

I still feel this song is more about life than .....than death, but as Roger said there is no reason why you should not put other interpretations on this song in what way it is meaningful to you...( more on this later )
Wish You Were Here is the best song about friendship I have ever heard, still astonishing and just gets straight under your skin.
