Food stamps:
Payment dates for SNAP benefits in September

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will begin its next round of payments
to recipients in September in nine days.

The SNAP program follows the same payment schedule from month to month, and the
exact dates vary from state to state. Some states will issue all of the food stamps payments
on one date, and others will continue for almost three-quarters of the month.

Payments are reloaded each month onto an electronic benefits transfer card, and states give
different names to these cards. The EBT card works similarly to a debit or ATM card, and the
money is intended for groceries. Participating SNAP locations include farmers markets, grocery
stores, and online retailers.

Here are the food stamp arrival dates for all 50 states and the District of Columbia for September:

  • Alabama: Sept. 4-23

States with higher poverty levels tend to see a larger number of SNAP-participating households.
Each household's food stamp allotment depends on the state requirements and where their gross
income falls related to the poverty line.

An average monthly SNAP benefit for a household of three is $577, with a maximum of $740.
An average payment for a household of eight is $1,150, with a maximum of $1,691.
