I probably have what I paid over 4,000 MSRP in Lego sets sitting in a pile in my unused dining room.
Most are behemoth in size, containing thousands of pieces and having cost 100s of dollars new from Lego. Each year Lego debuts dozens of new sets, but with the new comes the abandoning of the old, and many large, complex, and desirable sets are discontinued each year for one of several reasons, the most common simply being that the average shelf cycle is just under 2 years before retirement, with some very iconic sets having been a sliver for 6+ years and others that underperformed disappearing in just over a single calendar year.
Forbes magazine recently published an Article suggesting that Lego, the #1 toy
Company is also a better investment (in terms of new, factory sealed product that
Has exceeded its shelf run and is now no longer for sale by anyone but third party dealers, who know the value of what they hold) than solid gold, Coca Cola stock, and other traditionally white stable/valuable commodities. I personally have the treasure trove of sets for a twofold purposes, I myself love Lego and never stopped enjoying their product, and I would happily spend far more per year on getting all of the larger, more adult-oriented (in terms of complexity/price point)/ sets If I could, but I settle for what I can.
For those sets which are not my absolute favorite or belong to a theme that I don’t really collect or have anywhere to display, a angle sale of a set that cost 250-300 a few years ago is now enough for pay for a 500+ set like the lord of the rings Rivendell diorama which is over 6000 pieces.
This means that I never run out of sets to own/can easily swap “inventory” of my own for something new and breathtaking when it arises, or vice versa, can choose to open and build a very old
Set id normally not be able to afford because I only paid MSRP on it.
I am curious if there are any other adults out there (of any age, I just turned 33 for what it’s worth,
but I suspect as long as I have proper use of my hands/don’t develop some kind of arthritis or something prohibiting me from building Lego, I will probably always appreciate/build/display their products no matter how old I get, pretty sure I’d have “grown out of it” by now .
I’d post some pics of the biggest/coolest stuff I’ve ever built but they’re all at conventions/with me standing proudly in front, But it occurs to me they’re all highly incriminating insofar as my personal
Identity is concerned, given the specificity of showing who I am/what projects I’m associated with is an Excellent starting point for being harassed/blackmailed without recourse).
