Lone gunman kills fifty and injures hundreds
#1
A gunman in a high-rise hotel opened fire on a country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip late Sunday, killing at least 50 people and injuring hundreds of others in the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

The gunman, identified by police as Stephen Paddock, was later found dead by officers on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said during a news briefing. Paddock was 64.

Lombardo said “over 50” were killed in the shooting, though that toll could rise, as he noted that police were still investigating the scene. Police said an estimated 406 people were taken to area hospitals after the shooting. Authorities did not immediately specify how many of the people were wounded by gunfire or injured in the chaotic frenzy.

Paddock was found dead in his hotel room by Las Vegas SWAT officers who responded to the call about the shooting, police said, and they believe he killed himself shortly before they arrived.

The shooting marked the latest outbreak of gunfire and bloodshed to erupt in a public place, again transforming a seemingly routine night into one of terror. The carnage surpassed the death toll of 49 people slain when a gunman in Orlando, who later said he was inspired by the Islamic State, opened fire inside a crowded nightclub in June 2016.

Under the neon glow and glitz of the Vegas Strip, concertgoers dove for cover or raced toward shelter through a sea of water bottles, hats, shoes and other items lost in the stampede as a hail of gunfire rained down from the Mandalay Bay around 10 p.m. local time. According to police, more than 22,000 people were at the concert when Paddock began opening fire from his hotel room.

Police believe Paddock, a local resident, was a “lone wolf” attacker. Lombardo did not give further details, however, on Paddock’s background or possible motivation.

“We have no idea what his belief system was,” Lombardo said. “Right now, we believe he was the sole aggressor and the scene is static.”

Recordings of the attack suggested that Paddock used an automatic weapon. Paddock, who arrived at the hotel last Thursday, was found with more than 10 rifles, Lombardo said.

Paddock’s brother, Eric, told Reuters that the family was stunned by what happened.

“We have no idea,” Eric Paddock told the news agency. “We’re horrified. We’re bewildered and our condolences go out to the victims. We have no idea in the world.”

Las Vegas police said Monday morning that one off-duty officer with the department was killed in the shooting. Two other officers who were on-duty were injured, police said; one was in stable condition after surgery and the other sustained minor injuries.

Authorities were searching for a woman named Marilou Danley, described only as Paddock’s “traveling companion,” but police said early Monday they had located her as well as two cars they were seeking.

During a news conference Monday morning, Lombardo said that investigators have spoken with Danley, who was located outside the country, and do not believe she was involved in the shooting. Her relationship with Paddock was not immediately known, but they lived at the same address in Mesquite, Nev., according to public records. Lombardo said police in Mesquite were entering Paddock’s home to conduct a search on Monday morning.

May the Lord bless the innocent victims of this tragic situation. The gunman is a complete coward. Will continue to pray for the ones who didn't make it and the hundreds injured to make a speedy recovery. Silence the violence. Sad

Really tragic news and harrowing stories emerging. Amidst this terrible event there are some stories of bravery and kindness. As for the gunman, I simply have no words to express the horror and revulsion I feel.

Unfortunately some people on social media are posting hoax information, so double check before retweeting/sharing.

There are so many questions raised as this story unfolds.

It is more than an individual suddenly snaps.

It took many days of planning with lots of help it seems to me.

Something does not add up.

Careful planning took place.

I'm hearing reports that it was a medium sized machine gun by the sound of it.

Many other things too.....

So sad for the deaths .

Trying to put a link up to what it sounded like

Watched the news report this morning as it was happening, all you could hear was the constant pop pop pop of a machine gun, never seemed to stop, must have been scary as hell if you were there, what is going on with people?
A 64 year old guy? Sounds like everything got to much for him maybe ? god knows what was going on in his real life to go and do this, totally insane behavior, maybe he had ptsd or some mental illness going on ? only time will tell i suppose.
So glad we do not have guns as available as it is in some parts of the US or i think we would be seeing stuff like this as well.

America and there easy gun laws.  Seems anyone can get anything and its mostly legal.  I of course am no American  and frown upon all the needless deaths either intentional or accidental.

That is some list Audrey, absolutely crazy the amount of murders going on, did not know you could get a scanner app, we used to be able to pick up police radio sometimes on just a crappy transistor radio when we were kids, sometimes police radio comms would even come out of the tv speakers occasionally, think its illegal to have a scanner in the uk but not 100% sure on that.

Been more footage on tv news today, looks totally insanely horrible, when is this kind of thing ever going to end ? Tragic.

Was just browsing twitter, quite a few pretty graphic vids on there, dont know what they are doing putting them up, it just looks like someone going around filming dead people but checking for pulses when its pretty obvious they are not alive, looks a bit sick to me. When i watched what was happening when you could hear machine gun fire in the music venue, it sounded like the gun was being fired in the venue, didn't realise it was from a hotel across the street, what in hell kind of gun can do that from distance ?

It's not our gun laws. Tougher laws will only take them out of law abiding citizen hands. I carry 24/7 as I am license to do so. I believe if a madman starts firing in a restaurant if you are unarmed you are not part of the solution but a potential victim. I am a fan of Ohio concealed carry laws because criminals are not as fast to strike if they think a victim could be packing. The problem is these satanic assholes out here. If life is that bad and you want to kill yourself I don't condone it. But please don't take 50 life loving people with you. I am a vet of the Somalia conflict and suffer from Ptsd. Thats no excuse I don't have sick thoughts like that. Some people are just born evil. Sorry for the rant and I hope I didn't offend anyone. Sorry if I did and feel free to delete if necessary. I wish we could end unspeakable horrific tragedys like this
