I started reading Citizen Soldier a while ago, fairly lengthy book, written by same person who wrote Band of Brothers.
Just about the ordinary soldiers, not the generals sitting it out at the back, when I read it I can't imagine being 18-19 and landing on a beach under intense fire, what those guys went through can't ever be really understood by those who haven't experienced it themselves.
The battles in the snow covered Ardennes sounds horrific, freezing cold,no food, little water but still had to fight on,reading the book and others like it I keep reading a similar line,'We didn't think we were fighting for King and country,we were fighting for those who stood on either side of us.'I hope the world never sees this kind of thing ever again.
Wish my eyes would get better so I could finish reading it.
