When I saw this online, it hit me right in the gut, and I just started crying. Soundgarden was my favorite "grunge" band, after Nirvana.
I loved "Fell on Black Days", "Black Hole Sun", "Outshined", and so many others. I remember I wore out my cassettes (yes, cassettes!) of Soundgarden back in the 90s. I played them over and over and over.
And Chris Cornell's voice. Just absolutely phenomenal. I loved the song "Say Hello 2 Heaven" which he wrote in tribute for his friend and roommate, Andrew Wood, from the band "Mother Love Bone", after Andrew died of a heroin overdose in 1990.
I remember being so confused when I first heard it, because the band's name was said to be "Temple of the Dog", and I thought "That is Chris Cornell's voice, and nobody can tell me any different." But then I heard more about it, the band "Temple of the Dog", and why Chris wrote it. "Say Hello 2 Heaven" has been one of my favorite songs ever since I heard it for the first time.
A lot of people who knew Chris spoke of him having a "gentle soul." Being the artistic, "feeling" type of person often does have its downside, and that is...depression.
When I saw it on my computer screen on the news, it just felt like I had been hit with a ton of bricks. I know what depression feels like. But I know he was battling addictions, as well. It just made me so sick to my stomach; for things he had been going through, for his wife, for his children; for his whole family, and his friends.
This one just hit me hard. I cannot listen to "Say Hello 2 Heaven" right now, or really any of his songs; but especially "Say Hello 2 Heaven." It no longer makes me think of Chris writing it for his friend, Andy. Instead, all I can think of is Chris's death, and so for now, listening to it is ruined for me.
May You Rest in Peace, Christopher John Cornell.
