The effects are the same of conventional caffeine, increase of alertness and mental energy mainly. The difference between taking a coffee and time release caffeine is that once you take a coffee you reach a peak of caffeine in your body and then it starts decreasing, in contrast to time release pills where the caffeine in your organism remains constant for an interval of time. For example I was taking 300 mg pills of extended released caffeine, these pills effects last 6 hours, that means that every hour 50 mg are released, the amount of caffeine in the body remains around 50 mg for 6 hours. It's cheaper than coffee, the effects last longer and is hard to suffer overdose (anxiety for example).
Hope it helps you.
