We moved two years ago near one of top universities in nation for geology (many colleges don't even offer the degree)
This school has a special "honors geology" program; it's basically like having major & minor both in geology.
They take classes about individual areas related to geology, geography in addition to regular curriculum.
I think the summer 'tornado chasing' class would be awesome - my grandson thinks I'm crazy! LOL
He loves minerals, collects rocks, says prob will work in "energy".
85% of students there in geology graduating have jobs lined up before they graduate.
By moving in-state (back to my home state, location worked out well) and living here 2 yrs, graduating high school here, plus living with me off campus - GS is going to save almost $300,000. People told me we couldn't afford this with me disabled, but here we are!
Just like when I put myself thru private university nursing school. Where's there's the will there will be found the way.
Saving pennies and TBH will spend whatever I have on him. Determined he'll receive the education he deserves & wants.
It would hurt but I'll sell my beloved Chickering piano if absolutely must.
We will show them that if you dream , you can achieve.
if I have to put lien on my house (or sell my old crippled body on corner ROTFL j/k)
Unfortunately, they based his grants on his father's income this year (he hasn't seen father almost 2 yrs) I live on disability and we need assistance but the college (strangely) doesn't allow for unconventional families. At least his dad carries health ins on GS.
I looked ahead and next year he will be considered "independent" - whaaat? OK, then I guess I'll ck box he's employed PT and check "at risk for homelessness" box. If not for me, he would be... Somehow make them consider my income next year, which is the true & accurate amount we live upon.
Anyway, my grandson already researched pay in various part of country and says he's going to Oklahoma. Would you believe they pay new grads approx $150,000/yr beginning??!! Oklahoma? Every student at his college we tell what his major will be - they all say "oh, they make good money..." and go on to tell about someone they know or friend knows.
Personally, I want him to make a good living so I don't worry about him, but more important he likes his job.
9th grade with GS, my career counseling went like this kinda: "What do you love doing? What interests you and arouses passion? What could you get up and do even when you are having bad day and don't really feel like working? If you don't like your job, you will be miserable". His answer "History and Geology". Told him history could be his hobby.
He's already been in one battle re-enactment. You talk about funny.
I will tell you That story someday. I bet it will crack everyone up.

I've tried with all I have to make him the best he could be... now as I told him, "you're a man and must live with consequences of your choices, so think thru decisions carefully... follow your chosen path and give life your all, if you decide upon a course of action put all yourself into it " He has much of me, but not as daring or bold - think almost fatal wreck when young did that to him. In my case, mother tried to break my spirit and instead created a stubborn strong-willed spirit (*backfire* LOL)
More & more I'm stepping back to watch the paths GS chooses. Not easy. Of course I want to jump in and 'fix' everything.
It amazes me that he's almost as old as me when I married. wow. He couldn't handle a family right now.
I feel very old LOL yet so exciting to watch beginning of a new life with some much potential.
