Good Posts Linville and Tommy,
As an often traveler--full-time Baby Boom RVer--I see lots of homeless. I talk to them because I usually don't know anyone where I go, and I like to hear as much of their stories they feel comfortable sharing.
Like you both--and stats--confirm, my perception is that so many are young. They'll have to wait another 30-40 for SS and Medicare to kick in, and they'll be drained by then, and the kids won't have any money in the SS kitty anyway cause they never worked much.
But, save Bernie, I never heard one candidate talk any appreciable amount about the homeless youth, or the homeless in general. They are there for the dwindling middle class, who are themselves slipping into homelessness. But they vote.
And millions go there, and millions go there, but not here to help the problem. The causes are myriad, frankly too many to list. Not just, that they are "thin skinned" etc. The ones I talk to are anything but. But again they are not the ones still at home, taking selfies, and living the dream.
One clarification. At the beginning of the 19th century, one of two people listed their occupation as "farmer."--can't site a source, but did read it and it makes sense. Kids stayed late in extended homes then because they were on the farm, working. Then the depression, and a whole generation of young men had to leave the farm for the family to continue to exist, the "hobos", "rail riders". My grandmother had 12 kids, and most all the young men were forced to hit the road. But they hadn't been taking selfies, they had been working the farm.
Today is a different case altogether. I would only caution against scapegoating a generation. Lots goes into making a snowflake, or a homeless youngster, and no two are the same.
