Left out--not you--one of the most common.  I played what we called the "kalimaba"--African-- when I was young by the way.  The one they left out, or I didn't see was popular forevever, especially 19th century America:  the "mouth harp" or "juice harp".  You'd put it in your mouth, and the way you managed the interior of your mouth provided the pitch.

A few kids at the school i went to had these,sound great,they called them jews harps,something maybe got lost in translation i think.

Yeah, same here.  But I've never seen a person of the Jewish faith depicted sitting alone or in a group playing  "jews" harp, ha.  Hard to sing Hava Naglila, dance (name of the dance too, and they always go together), and play the juice harp at the same time.  Anyway, as the song proceeds the tempo speeds, and if following the melody, your finger would be left behind.  But  did hear it pronounced the same way, like you.
