George Vernon Hudson came up with the idea for daylight saving time because he was frustrated that dusk came so early in summer—it interfered with his evening bug-collecting rounds. In 1895, he went before the Royal Society of New Zealand and proposed a two-hour shift forward in October and a two-hour shift back in March.
