HARARE (Reuters) -
The American dentist who killed Cecil the lion a month ago in Zimbabwe paid for an illegal hunt and should be extradited to the southern African nation to face justice, environment minister Oppah Muchinguri said on Friday.
In a news conference, Muchinguri referred to
55-year-old Walter Palmer as a "foreign
poacher" and said she understood the
Prosecutor General had started the process to
have him extradited from the United States.
"We are appealing to the responsible authorities for his extradition to Zimbabwe so that he can be held accountable for his illegal action," she said.
Palmer has admitted killing the 13-year-old
predator, a favorite with foreign tourists and the subject of an Oxford University study, but said he had hired professional guides and believed all the necessary hunting permits were in order.
Muchinguri also said Palmer's use of a bow and arrow to kill the lion, who is said to have been lured out of Hwange National Park with bait before being shot, was in contravention of
Zimbabwean hunting regulations.
Palmer, a life-long big game hunter, managed to return to the United States before the authorities were aware of the controversy around Cecil's death.
"It was too late to apprehend the foreign
poacher because he had already absconded to his country of origin," Muchinguri said.
The killing has sparked social media outrage
against Palmer in the United States. The White
House said on Thursday it would review a public petition of more than 100,000 signatures to have him extradited.

I think they do need to send his butt back to where this horrible crime was commited ... Maybe he did think he was all "legal", that's for the courts to decide. The killing of animals that are in protected zones are by definition, protected.

i know many hunt for food for survival. i have been a vegetarian, since i was three.
but, the perpetrator is also accused of murdering other endangered species. a white rhino and one other.
it was surely the sporting type hunt. Cecil was in a protected area. He was wearing a collar.
No one will ever convince me this rat bastard did not kill Cecil with malice aforethought.
During the hunt – which the organisers later admitted was badly carried out – it was alleged that Cecil was lured at night about half a mile out of the national park using bait, and then shot with a bow and arrow. The next day he was found wounded by the hunters and killed, before being beheaded and skinned.
Animals cannot be killed within the confines of the park. The hunters then removed his collar – further contravening park rules.

May Cecil rest in peace. And may all involved in this atrocity rot in hell. Being wounded with a bow and arrow over and over again, as their torment.
(it is impossible for me to be around hunting. impossible. or, the carcass of any animal. i cannot touch it. nor smell it. I would see the hunters in a wealthy community coming home from upstate with deceased deer on their car. they would say, they like to balance nature. well, god help me, if i did not take life so seriously, i would have balanced nature further and taken them out.)

oh, and one other. Babe, a pig, was in a famous movie I took my son to.
They are smart. We just all fell in love with Babe.
And, then, some pr*ck made a bid on Babe that the owner did not refuse. Babe was killed and eaten.
They may as well be beating a two year old, when I hear of these things. I become so angry.
(sorry, hunters for legit reasons. i cannot be party to the death of any animal or person.)

I just see no sport in shooting defenseless animals. That's cowardly and sick. Â I bet there would be far fewer sports hunters if the animals could shoot back.
Charon, someone made a bid on a famous pig, then killed and ate it? Now that's strange. I never saw Babe, the movie. I am familiar with it however.

Well I do enjoy "hunting" and I already have the advantage of projectiles and gunpowder ... I do not "bait" a spot, that's like fishing in a rain barrel ... And what I kill ... I eat ... Nothing goes to waste... I am an omnivore ... And was taught not to be wasteful and never just shoot something just to be shooting it ... This "sport" hunting crap is stupid ... So what's the sport in shooting a tame(or somewhat tame) animal, it's defences and intuition skills are relaxed and if you can put a collar on it ... Well I just don't see any sport in that ...
To shoot ,for example, a white rhino .. Hey there are only like 5-6 left in existance because of overkill by poachers and those idiot "sport" hunters .. I'd like to think my g-kids would at least get to see a live one,instead of having to see them like I see the dodo ... In a book ...

snopes claims arnold the pig from green acres was not eaten at the cast party. but, left it up in the air about babe the pig.
it was 95. we were all members of PETA. we all just had young kids. and, we all heard this. i believe it totally.
yes, when i raised a chipmunk and wanted to put her in commercials, i was told they need two of tiny creatures to make a commercial.
several piglets were used on babe. but no one went to babe2 cuz we all knew he was dead. i cannot quickly find a confirmation of same as computer is being: slowly i turn, step by step. (another vaudeville routine i learned somewhere. don't mind me.)

That's really creepy that Arnold the pig was eaten by his fellow workers at the farewell bbq of the show Green Acres. Arnold was a valuable member of the cast. Just because he was a pig was no reason to eat him.
I had fond memories of Green Acres, but not now. I hope the cannibals burn in hell! Forever!

Are you kidding me!?!? What is wrong with people! Man these idiots are really running amuck and to top it off they are actually allowed to purchase weapons and traverse the whole damn globe to slaughter fenced off animals! I'll never understand this sport hunting ... Just for what ... A trophey?
So let's wipe out yet another entire species for fun, not for survival ... Not for food, shelter, or clothes... But simply FUN ...

(i always wanted to raise a lion or tiger for a zoo. when i had an opportunity to make commercials with several big cats, i said no as i knew cats would maim me. many years later one of the kitties i raised used me as a climbing post. ripped my eye. i got the proxy strip on so quickly the plastic surgeon was impressed. it was not the kittens fault.
so, i have a special love for big cats. i have always wanted to raise one in heaven. maybe Cecil and Jericho will visit me when i get there.
May God not have mercy on these evil doers souls. i cannot help it.

ok, usa today, claims this may be rumor. allegedly jericho is wearing a gps device. he was allegedly moving somewhat on the estate grounds. he has not been seen. sounds as though he could be wounded by a bow and arrow also. awaiting further torment. sighs.
and, Jericho was watching his brother's cubs after his death. no one knows what will become of them.
the man whom gave up this alleged truth was quite jovial about it all. most news agencies r still reporting the death of the second lion. i guess after all the bloody news people made it clear the dentist would pay fifty thousand for Cecil to be killed, that someone else got the same bright idea. The lure of money can cause some people to do just anything.
sorry. my wrath is not at all hunters. i have deer in my yard all the time. they r so trusting.
but, having a trophy room, or a room of death, as Ace Ventura 2 put it, is disgusting. i never try to make all be vegetarians. in fact, although my kid's doctor said, well, maybe let him be as his father had inherited cholesterol problems, i would not.
its just my personal choice. but, man, i saw so much animal suffering in rescue. i learned to love from my animals.
so, i understand that most people eat meat. in many an area, hunting is necessity.
it is the baiting of the lion. the removing of his collar. the letting him lie there wounded by bow and arrow for so long that bothers me.
so, carry on. i am just very protective of children, animals, and, most people.

I do know what you are saying Charon and I totaly agree ... "Trophy Hunters" are overly rich spoiled bastards... To kill for the sake of killing or to display on a wall to me is totaly senseless ... I see no point in it at all!
One day they will have to stand judgement for the horrid crimes they commit .. I just don't think it's coming fast enough for me ...
Those sick bastards need to be publicaly hung .... Slowly ... Not break their necks ... Just choked to death realllll slowwwww...
