doxepin or trazodone - anxietyguy - 05-05-2018
Anyone have experience on this ? My problem is to stay asleep. I usually sleep 4 hours and then I wake up , like it was an explosion around or like if I took 3 redbulls. What I am doing now is take a zolpidem there, but it took around 30 minutes to hit me, and give me 2:30 or 3 hours of dreamland. Problem, are the days I can only be on bed for 6 or 7 hours, to do this I need at least 8 hours.
Reading this forum and googling, I found this two drugs that might help me. Anyone have any experience on this ?

Anxietyguy, doxepin and trazodone induce sedation through different mechanisms, so it might be worth trying both. Doxepin at low doses is essentially a H1-antagonist like Benadryl. Trazodone at low doses is also a H1-antagonist but also is a 5HT2C-antagonist.
Personally, trazodone makes me feel like garbage. I threw out the box after trying it 2 or 3 times. I keep doxepin around, and if I really can't get some sleep, just 1 mg helps.

I feel ok with trazadone at lowest dose, mirtazapine was the worst thing i have had for depression, felt like i was sleep walking next day, then all the side effects that have caused me lots of problems, all the weight gain caused me to get ill as well, have now lost most of the weight prob cos mirtazapine has left me still feeling ill, never had the problems that i have now before starting with mirtazapine, guess we really are different.
Have noticed a lot of other people are on them now, seems to be the choice of gps at the mo, no doubt with a little persuasion from the pharm companies.

Yes ! exaclty the same problem I had on mirtazapine, I took it a Friday night ( 9 pm ) I slept till Saturday 2 pm ! And even so, I was still feeling indeed of more sleep

I dont understand terms like H1-antagonist , it would be better if things were explained in a bit more simple lay mans terms, no offence as your trying to help, just no idea what things like that mean.

Antagonist = blocker.
H1 is a receptor for histamine.
Histamine is the main neurotransmitter that causes us to stay awake. So a histamine receptor blocker (H1-antagonist) blocks the effects of histamine, making us sleepy.

thanks for that invisiblejungle, i can get that now, and i always thought histamines made you drowsy,maybe i thought of anti histamines ?.Now what is 5HT2C-antagonist?We could be here a long time if more terms like that are posted lol, but hey, you just taught me something new which aint no bad thing,thanks again.
