(CC BY Mark Taylor, Wikimedia Commons) Fox News commentator Geraldo Rivera backed fired NBC News host Matt Lauerin a series of tweets Wednesday, saying that “news is a flirty business.” Rivera later apologized, calling sexual harassment “a horrendous problem,” but only after Fox News had distanced itself from his comments. Rivera called Lauer a “great guy” and “a real gentleman,” and defended him, saying that “it seems like current epidemic of sexual harassment allegations may be criminalizing courtship and conflating it with predation.” In his tweets he also mentioned Garrison Keillor, who was fired Wednesday by Minnesota Public Radioover allegations of what the network termed “improper behavior.” Variety reported that Lauer has been accused of exposing himself to a female employee and had “reprimanded her for not engaging in a sexual act.” He also reportedly once gave a colleague a sex toy along with a note describing how he wanted to use it on her. Yet, Rivera implied that Lauer was just trying to date the women and being a “jerk” about it, saying that doing so did not qualify as sexual harassment. Rivera also suggested that accusations of sexual harassment should have a shorter statute of limitations and require corroboration, saying that some accusers are motivated by prospective financial gain. He added that the topic was too “red hot” to allow for rational discussion at the moment. Fox News issued a statement distancing itself from Rivera’s comments. “Geraldo’s tweets do not reflect the views of FOX News or its management,” the statement said. “We were troubled by his comments and are addressing them with him.” Rivera subsequently issued an apology, claiming he did not explain himself properly. Rivera was himself accused of sexual harassment in 1991. In his autobiography Rivera claimed to have seduced many women including the singer and actress Bette Midler.  In a subsequent interview, Midler said that Rivera had not “seduced” her but rather drugged her and groped her. “He didn’t rape me, but it was close,” she said. Other women will sometimes defend the victim in the system. Because most of us know that much of this is true. It was expected to treat females in such a fashion. And, women were trained to keep their mouthes shut about it all. Or, their career, their schooling, their lives will be hell. So many are coming forth with names of tons in politics and in the celeb field. Not a surprise. To women. Maybe to some men. Now, NY is gonna allegedly make it illegal or unwise to whistle at a passing female. Ok, that never worked anyway for the constuction workers but we all learned to ignore it. I was an early feminist and I have no idea why its legal for women to be topless in parts of NYC now. How does that show we are legit and equals to men in many areas. No idea. I wonder if that Greg Kelly on NY channel five news will ever have repurcussions. he acts as though he were 12 and was already accused of rape or a similar charge by a woman. Lots of gossip about him. But, when one's father had been Chief Police Officer in the City, I guess one can get away with more. But, I do recall Geraldo making a fool of himself around women back before he opened some empty treasure trove on live TV. When 9/11 happened, i watched fox news and friends for awhile. months. I could ignore that every woman news caster has to be blonde on Fox. But, when one of the bimbos said: a coup d'etat had taken place. she emphasized the "p" at the end of coup. It is silent. I think they made Greta get plastic surgery. I mean they were pigs and I rarely watch news. Just lately to see whom has been brought down today. They are gonna have to put a statute of limitations on suing or speaking of alleged attacks and indiscretions cuz if this keeps going, the Courts will be full. The Courts often manifest a man's point of view. We seem to be living in sodom and gomorrah once again.
