Cell phones charging in bathtub can Kill - Charon - 07-12-2017 Family of Texas teen electrocuted by cellphone says she was avid bath-taker, warns of electronics dangers BY TERENCE CULLEN NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Updated: Wednesday, July 12, 2017, 10:35 AM The Texas teen tragically killed by her charging cellphone loved taking baths, her family recalled as they continue to raise awareness of the dangers of electronics near water. Madison Coe died early Sunday when her plugged-in Samsung Edge Plus fell into the bathtub. “It’s not uncommon for her to spend two hours to two and a half hours in the bathtub,” stepmom Felisha Owens told CBS affiliate KRQE in Lovington, N.M. Madison, 14, lived in Lubbock, Texas, but was spending the summer with her father in Lovington. Texas teen electrocuted while holding cellphone in a bathtub “She was my everything,” grieving dad Logan Coe told KRQE. Madison Coe, 14, died Sunday while in a bathtub. (FAMILY PHOTO) Her phone was hooked up to an extension cord — a common household practice — when it dropped in the tub, her stepmom said. “She had her phone plugged into the extension cord and it was by the bathtub and I did it, she did it, we all had sat there in the bathtub with our phones plugged in and played our games,” Owens told the news channel. Madison’s grandmother previously said there was a burn mark on her hand from the phone. But that might not be the case anymore. Owens said she hopes Madison’s untimely death becomes a warning for others. Stepmom Felisha Owens said it was common for family members to plug their cellphones into an extension cord. “The bathroom is a place for showers and personal time and your phones don’t belong in the bathroom,” Owens told KRQE. “Electricity and water do not mix. All it takes is a drop.” More people are historically electrocuted in the home than on the job. Of 351 electrocutions between 1965 and 2006, 78% were found to be household electrocutions, according to a 2010 study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Madison played basketball and the tuba, and had just graduated middle school in Lubbock. She was set to attend high school in Houston. “This is such a tragedy that doesn’t need to happen to anyone else,” grandmother Donna O’Guinn told NBC affiliate KCDB in Texas a day earlier. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/family-electrocuted-texas-teen-warn-electronics-dangers-article-1.3320407 RE: Cell phones charging in bathtub can Kill - nickolyko - 07-13-2017 It is so much tragedy in this post . I dont know if there is any kind of comfort to parents . They may find comfort if they loose their child by a more commor cause , in a car accident . It is difficult to believe that such things happen due to a cable cord not insulated . Sh*t like that dont happen every day. After that I will be extra carefull when serfing in the net with my iphone while in bath. RE: Cell phones charging in bathtub can Kill - Popster - 07-13-2017 use NOTHING electrical while in the bathtub... The crazy part is that if she were using her phone via battery, she would just have killed the phone and not herself. A real lapse in judgement with too high a price to pay. RE: Cell phones charging in bathtub can Kill - G.Elias - 07-20-2017 I'd never think about using anything electrical in the bathroom, was taught that at an early age, very sad for the kids family, should have been avoided. People just cannot leave those damn cell phones alone for 5 minutes these days, they have caused a lot of injuries from accidents, most common from texting/calling whilst behind the wheel of an automobile. Its illegal to use it whilst driving here, don't know if it is in the US or other countries?A top cop was recently spotted and filmed driving and using his phone, has said he was sorry,no charges against him though, strange that...not. RE: Cell phones charging in bathtub can Kill - Charon - 07-20-2017 One cannot drive and use a cell phone in US either TG. but, they do. In cases I watch, The prosecution will show the last texts of the defendant, to prove he or she was using their texting function at exact moment of accident. One famous case, a girl is angry with her boyfriend. Claims she will turn into another car on highway to kill herself cuz he does not love her, and then she did. She killed an entire family on their way to holiday by deliberately weaving her car into oncoming traffic. Defendant had terrific brain trauma. She lived. And she claims she did nothing wrong. But they have the texts and she had just texted: i am going to kill myself by hitting another car. But she killed them. Will not take responsibility for it. Claims its the brain trauma. When i was growing up, we used sun tanning lamps. Just on our faces. So dangerous I know. Then one day we heard a girl that rode the high school bus with us, had died the night before as she was using a sun tanning lamp, in the bathtub. Electrocuted herself cuz it fell in. Man, we learned to never use electric near water. In the article about the cell phone death, they mentioned that quite a few younger people have made this bad habit of using a cord to keep their cell phones going whilst in tub. The parents and schools should be teaching them how stupid that is. Way too sad. Her mother had even taken a picture of daughter's phone being plugged into a long cord in the house. I guess the bath room door was left open. So, as the poor girl makes her final post cuz she then drops phone, her stupid mother had just taken a pic of how daughter plugged phone into a cord. The whole family did this, and laughed about it. Not now, I imagine. Stupid. But I kinda think if i saw a flashing pic being taken, whilst i was in tub, i may have been startled enough to drop the phone as well. No one has said this yet. I just read the entire article and found it particularly peculiar that mom snaps a pic of daughters connection on phone. Then daughter drops phone right then. Allegedly. But, really stupid parent there. RE: Cell phones charging in bathtub can Kill - G.Elias - 07-23-2017 Wow,the car crash woman sounds awful, threatening to kill herself but kills innocent people, even though its law not to, many still carry on using their phones behind the wheel here,I see it regularly, selfish putting others at risk. So her mum knew she was charging the phone whilst in the bath of water, where the heck has common sense left their brains,I would have thought a parent would know better, apparently not in this case at least. Too many people spend too much time glued to their phones,I'm always having to dodge them on footpaths when out walking or I'd have had a few bumps into them. I don't even take my phone out with me everywhere I go,only if I think I am going to need it or am waiting on an important call, its left at home most of the time,if I aint in at home when someone phones then tough,I don't wish to be available 24/7,I have a life to lead,I will not be a slave to this stupidity. RE: Cell phones charging in bathtub can Kill - shortwheel - 08-01-2017 Maybe use a USB extension cord instead of a regular AC extension cord? I would think that would be less likely to electrocute should it fall into the tub. Charging one's phone in the tub is probably a bad idea overall, though. Charge up your phone before getting in the tub if you must use it while bathing. RE: Cell phones charging in bathtub can Kill - WhichBlair - 08-02-2017 For what it's worth, I work with IP cameras from time to time. Even though they are labeled "low voltage" they zap you good. Nothing is low enough to take into the bath with me (if I took baths). I'm a shower guy
RE: Cell phones charging in bathtub can Kill - Sudsy - 08-03-2017 OMG so sad. Sudsy RE: Cell phones charging in bathtub can Kill - Charon - 06-17-2023 Uhm, I feel compelled to bump this because I cannot believe anyone would be so foolish and naive to use an electric connection whilst in the tub. When I was three, i was chewing gum. And i stuck the silver part of a scissors into the outlet. the force blew me back against the other wall and i spit out my gum. And i took electricity very very seriously from then on. Oh please don't use cell phones whilst in water. I don't believe any organization that would say it is safe. It is taking a chance on a nasty death. Oh, and the houseshare says it wont harm you cuz it is low voltage. Luck of the draw, perhaps that very hour the gvt is checking out electrical connections. Or the phone misfires. Nasty way to die. But houseshare said If u r taking a phone into the bathtub, u gotta rethink your life. Something is amiss. I just think this is stinkin thinkin to charge a phone whilst immersed in water. You better be ready to meet God cuz, u never know. |
