National Drink Beer Day

Raise a glass of your favourite ale or lager and celebrate Drink Beer Day!

One of the oldest man-made beverages in history, beer has been produced since the Neolithic Era with some breweries dating back as far as 1040. It is little wonder why drinking beer has come to be such a popular and entertaining activity.

With hundreds of different new and traditional varieties available, Drink Beer Day gives all drinkers a wonderful opportunity to sample both local and internationally brewed ales and lagers.

Held annually, this exciting holiday is recognised in many different countries across the globe and taking part could not be easier. Simply gather a few friends, nip down to your nearest off-licence or supermarket and crack open a beer for a fun- packed day.

Alternatively, celebrate by attending beer festivals or beer-tasting events held in your local area.

And

National Good Neighbor Day

[Image: National-Good-Neighbor-Day-September-28-...icture.jpg]

Not so long ago, the world felt like a smaller place, and everybody knew everybody else in their neighborhood.

Now, many of us aren’t familiar with our neighbors, and only speak to them in passing. Why not use Good Neighbor Day as an opportunity to lend a proverbial cup of sugar, and get to know the people who live nearby?

And

Ask A Stupid Question Day

We’ve all done it, had that question we wanted to ask that just sounded astoundingly stupid. We’re embarrassed that it even occurred to us, and worse, that we didn’t know the answer when it seemed so simple.

The truth is there is no such thing as a stupid question, except the one that you choose not to ask. We never learn anything if we’re afraid to ask the question to begin with, whether that’s by researching it or asking someone who might know.

Ask a Stupid Question Day encourages you to overcome your fear of sounding uneducated, and opening yourself to learning by asking your stupidest questions.

History of Ask A Stupid Question Day

During the 1980’s a bunch of teachers realized that their students weren’t asking questions for fear of sounding stupid. So they created a day dedicated to letting students ask the questions they were most ashamed of.

By making a place that was safe for all questions, they were encouraging them to open up and share their curiosity with the class, without the fear of being ridiculed.

Ever since then Ask a Stupid Question Day has been an annual tradition celebrated by American Schools everywhere, and has recently travelled into Britain and India.

The kind of questions that get asked cover an incredibly diverse amount of topics, from the philosophical “What if the hokey pokey really is what it’s all about?”, to the more practical “Is the nose the center of the face?”

There’s even more questions that are equally odd in their nature, but are ponderances about human behavior, like “Why do we press harder on a remote control when the batteries are going dead?” and the humours “What does cheese say when it gets its picture taken?”

Ask A Stupid Question Day is dedicated to all these questions and more.

World Heart Day

Heart Day is part of an international campaign to spread awareness about heart disease and stroke prevention.

This is the perfect day to quit smoking, get exercising and start eating healthy – all in the name of keeping your ticker in good working order, and improving the health and well being of people the world over.

The World Heart Federation have found that heart disease and strokes are the world’s leading cause of death, killing 17.1 million people every year – that’s more than victims of cancer, HIV and AIDS and malaria.

Overeating, lack of exercise, unhealthy diets and high blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels are all factors which can trigger heart disease and threaten our own lives, and those of loved ones.

Heart Day was set up to drive home the message that heart problems can be prevented. The aim is to improve health globally by encouraging people to make lifestyle changes and promoting education internationally about ways to be good to your heart.

This lesson is becoming increasingly relevant as reports of obesity, poor diet and physical inactivity in children and young people become more and more common.

Events take place to promote healthy hearts. Charities and other organisations coordinate walks and runs, health checks, public talks, shows and exhibitions to name a few of the interesting and informative events which mark the day.

So on Heart Day, get involved, eat your fruit and veg and get outside; both you and your heart will feel the benefits.

And

Biscotti Day

Chocolate Hazelnut, Honey Pistachio, Almond and Lemon Dipped in White Chocolate, Dried Cherry and Almond Biscotti, Biscotti alla Parmigiana, Peppermint Biscotti, Almond and Raisin, these are just a few samples of the absolutely rainbow of flavors you can get Biscotti in.

All of them are the perfect accompaniment to your favorite blend of coffee or a steaming cup of relaxing tea, their double-baked crunch absorbing the myriad of flavors and softening into an expertly textured snack.

Biscotti Day celebrates these wonderful treats, and reminds you to try a new flavor, or indulge in your favorite.

History of Biscotti Day

Biscotti are almond biscuits that originate in Prato Italy, they are the result of a process that leaves them delicious and crunchy, twice-baking. Their firm crispy texture is one of the reasons they’re traditionally served in Vin Santo, a sweet white dessert wine. Biscotti were the result of a process that was used to help preserve food for a long time, and thus twice-baked foods were often taken on long journeys and wars by Roman Legions.

Since then they’ve been a popular part of the dietary culture of Italy, and eventually spread across the world finding a new home in coffee shops.

The cooking process starts with a barely wet dough of flour, sugar, eggs, and unskinned/ unroasted almonds, without any form of yeast or fat. This dough is baked once in a slab the shape of the biscotti, and then baked again after being sliced into the signature shape known to the end customer.

While the traditional recipe involves almonds, as mentioned above, they can also be made with pine nuts, walnuts, dry fruits like raisins, or just about any low-moisture ingredient you can conceive of. It’s from these origins that the humble Biscotti comes.

NATIONAL COFFEE DAY

Whether getting one to go or lingering over a second cup, on September 29 be sure to observe National Coffee Day!

Ah, the perfect cup of java. According to an expert cupper (a professional coffee taster), there are four components of a perfect cup: aroma, body, acidity, and flavor.

From the moment the average coffee lover opens a fresh bag of coffee beans, the aroma beckons, percolating the senses.

Even those who don’t drink coffee tend to enjoy the fragrance a roasted bean casts. When determining the body of a coffee, the bean, the roast, and the brew are all factors.

The bean affects the texture of the coffee, whether its silky, creamy, thick or thin on the tongue and throat.

However, the darker the roast and how it is brewed will alter the feel of a coffee’s body, too.

Grandpa’s motor oil blend versus the coffee shop around the corner’s silky smooth, well- practiced grind have entirely different bodies. The region a coffee is grown determines its acidity. The higher the elevation the coffee grows, the higher the quality and the acidity.

These coffees are considered brighter, dryer, even sparkling by cuppers.

When it comes down to it, coffee lovers cherish the flavor as well as the caffeinated boost this roasted bean gives morning or night, black or with cream and sugar.

Hot or cold it provides enjoyment even when decaffeinated! There are many legendary accounts of how coffee first came to be, but the earliest credible evidence of either coffee drinking or the knowledge of the coffee tree appears in the middle of the 15th century in the Sufi monasteries around Mokha in Yemen.

It was here coffee seeds were first roasted and brewed, much like they are prepared today.

Yemeni traders brought coffee back to their homeland from Ethiopia and began to cultivate the seed. In 1670, coffee seeds were smuggled out of the Middle East by Baba Budan, as he strapped seven coffee seeds onto his chest.

The first plants grown from these smuggled seeds were planted in Mysore.

It was then that coffee spread to Italy, to the rest of Europe, to Indonesia and the Americas. Brazil produces more coffee in the world than any other country followed by Colombia.

More than 50 countries around the world grow coffee, providing a delicious variety for the indulgence of steamy cups of the black drink for connoisseurs to consume.

Mud Pack Day

Mud has been known to have health properties for a very long time, and has been a popular way of sustaining beauty and staving off old age.

No, we’re not talking about the mud you can find in the mud puddles after a heavy rain, nor the clay down at your local riverside, though we could be! You’d be surprised where some of the beauty products come from that can stave off old age and leave you looking amazing.

There’s even hot mud pits, like hot springs, that people visit to sit in and enjoy the health and beauty benefits of nature’s own spa.

History of Mud Pack Day

The use of mud for therapeutic and beauty purposes can be traced back to the 16th century during the Renaissance. Baths were considered to be of such import that the proper way to bathe for therapeutic purposes was considered to be the province of a physician.

During the bathing process people would be bathed, purged, packed in mud, and then sent into a bath to wash off the therapeutic mud. So ubiquitous was the use of mud for healing purposes that it was often used to treat humans and animals alike.

A total of 78 different conditions were listed during this time that could benefit from bathing.

This practice carried on into the 19th and 20th centuries, and further refinements were made to the entire process. Rather than bathing in mud, it was during this period that the mud pack first came into existence as a concept all its own.

From that point on its been in a state of constant refinement as technology formed with ancient practices to create the best in youthful experiences in spas all over the world.

International Translation Day

Launched in 1953, International Translation Day is a relatively recent entry into the calendar of world events.

Established by the International Federation of Translators, the annual celebration is an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of translators who endeavour to make the world a slightly smaller place by breaking down language barriers and allowing great literature to be enjoyed far more widely.

The work of translators is seen as being of growing importance due to growing opportunities for international travel and globalisation of trade markets.

The event is marked with a series of dedicated events, seminars and symposiums across the world. International Translation Day itself coincides with the feast day of St. Jerome, a Christian scholar and priest who was the first person to translate the Bible into Latin from the original Hebrew, making it accessible for the first time to a far wider audience.

St. Jerome is the patron saint of translators.

Older Peoples Day

With people living and working longer, it’s increasingly important that we recognise the importance of supporting senior citizens and OAPs within our society.

Senior Citizens Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the long-term contribution and dedication of older people, and to ensure that we’re doing our best to give something back to older people.

And

World Vegetarian Day

[Image: World-Vegetarian-Day-Facebook-Cover-Picture.jpg]

Every year there are thousands of people making the move to a healthier, more socially responsible way of living. These people care about the lives of animals and want cruelty to come to an end, they want to live long healthy lives and avoid the perils of heart disease, and they want to have beautiful bodies sustained by living in tune with the Earth.

Who are these people?

They’re vegetarians, and World Vegetarian Day celebrates their decision to eliminate meat and animal products from their diet and live a more conscientious life.

History of World Vegetarian Day

World Vegetarian Day was established by the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) in 1977 to help promote the vegetarian way of life, and educate people on the health and social benefits of making the move to eliminate meat from their diets.

As omnivores, humans are capable of surviving in complete health on a diet that contains no animal meat or products of any kind, but are there other benefits than merely a clean conscience?

As it turns out, the answer is an unequivocal yes.

Vegetarian diets are significantly more healthy than diets that contain animal products, especially when you are conscientious about your fat intake. With a low-fat vegetarian diet you can completely avoid any issues with cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the United States alone.

Not only do vegetarian diet remove animal fat and cholesterol from their diets (especially true for vegans), but they consume more fiber and anti-oxidants, well known for their ability to fight cancer!

So profound is the effect of vegetarianism on our health it has statistically been shown to add 13 healthy years to our lives.

Need more proof?

Just look at Okinawa, where the people with the longest life-span in the world live. Guess what their diet primarily consists of?

International Coffee Day

[Image: International-Coffee-Day-Heart-Coffee-Picture.jpg]

Coffee in the morning; coffee and a catch up with old friends; going for coffee with your new hot date – we drink coffee morning, day and night with friends, business associates and lovers. You have only to walk down the nearest high street and note the number of coffee chains to realise the extent of our love affair with our favourite caffeinated beverage.

Whether you favour espresso, americanos, lattes or cappuccinos; iced, decaf, instant or filter – Coffee Day is the day to savour and appreciate your beverage, and maybe even pick one up for free at certain chains in the USA.

Coffee Day also marks the long history of the drink: the properties of coffee beans are thought to have first been discovered in Ethiopia. The beans are actually the pits found in the coffee berry or cherry.

The story goes that a 9th century goat herder noticed their stimulating effects on his goats and began experimenting.

Coffee drinking was originally popularised in the Arab world from around the 15th century spreading across Asia then to Italy and across Europe and to the Americas – and finally to your coffee cup.

Today, coffee is one of the world’s biggest crops so buying ethically grown coffee is all the more important – be sure to be selective in buying your cup of coffee and supporting ethical trade.

So when you drink your cup of coffee today, inhale its aroma, taste its dark and full-bodied flavour, think about its story – but most of all enjoy.

Linville... Another day mainly for you my friend
