Unknown texter - WhichBlair - 06-18-2017

Hi, so one day I got a text from an unknown number offering IOP services with several popular products for sale. I don't really buy from very many places. Two to be exact. I have bought from other vendors in the past but not for years. I'm wondering if that's happened to anyone else? I have a hard time believing one of the two vendors I use are selling phone numbers.

So it's probably some old seller that's recently sold phone numbers of old customers. But think there's something there's something more nefarious going on? I surely didn't respond but it's weird having someone out there with my number. I'm not even sure I gave my number out to anyone except a very legit vendor selling from Albiion who stopped selling due to a change of regulations there.

Anyone getting texts like this?

Thanks!

Wow WhichBlair, It must be quite alarming that someone has your mobile number and specifically offered you iop services from a text!!
Did they say who they were, not I want to know who, just if they did?

Could it be a google thing? They do targeted advertising based on data they collect from your searches...Though I very much doubt thats this is the case!  I wonder how on earth they associated your number with iop's?!

I did read that more than one iop was hacked/compromised and had customer data stolen a while back, maybe this is where it comes from?  Huh

Still, it is very unnerving that they have your number at all, let alone shot you a text of that nature!!

Any respectiable vendor worth their salt would surely not have the need to send marketing texts, let alone take that kind of risk!!

Probably just chance scammers...But still, very strange indeed!!

They did identify themselves. Appears to have come from an area code here in the U.S. But you never know. It's definitely creepy. I can PM you (or anyone else) the name they used. I'm tempted to find a public phone somewhere and dial that number.

Yeah, WhichBlair, Like you think the number is most likely spoofed and not real.

But it could be interesting how it comes up, still.

They can have programs that generate false numbers and use them to call from anywhere in the world and  set it up so that it appears local or say from Portland, Or.

RE: Unknown texter - D-izzy - 06-19-2017

The fact they identified themselves is even stranger especially not with holding thier phone number, though I guess as Linville rightly pointed out its probably a spoofed number, its quite easy with just a computer and a bit of knowlage to spoof a number(I have seen it on a TV show about how real scum-bags try to steal vunerable peoples bank details)...things like how you can put the phone down, pick it back up and here a dial tone and think its safe to call your bank, but the scammers are still on the line listening in on the conversation!!

I know this is probably not the case, and I certainly hope not, but exploring all possibilities it wouldn't/couldn't be an old acquaintance or someone that knows you, or enough about you at least, to be messing with you in this way?  I mean they obviously have your number from somewhere and they know that you have an intrest in such things...I just can't see it being a genuine iop(even a bad one!), you know how careful WE have to be with these things...even a scam iop you've never used should be a little bit carefull(though its still possiable I guess!).

Ok, so please I'm just shooting in the dark here so do not read too much into this...(Or anything else I ever say for that matter, not ever lol!)

But could it be a new weird tact from L3?! Again, I doubt it very much infact i'm prob getting into the realms of, 'just plain stoopid' here, but assuming whoever it is knows that you aren't actually going to try to use the information in the text to contact them as a new iop, could they have another agenda here going on?

Eitherway, it's certainly a VERY strange one indeed...Me personally, I would steer well clear, don't call them and never worry about it again!

(I would still like to know if its just real dumb, or something else!)

Perhaps you will get another text tomorrow from an iop you do actually know of, explaining that they accidently sent a request to the wrong person and thats all it is and nothing more...

I really do hope so, or some other totally innocent explanation, I know it would have me feeling quite anxious, and I guess it must certainly be quite disconcerting for you to...

i get emails but its the same concept, unknown or previously unused vendor soliciting sales and prices are always attractive but probably a scam

RE: Unknown texter - nickolyko - 06-19-2017

It is very common to receive mails from unknown vendors . They try to tempt always so that you take the dive. And say goodbye to your money. Most of all since all you fresh members belong to our forum first you can spend some time reading. the whose got it thread is a very useful one here as those for international iop's. If you had the privilege of pm you can get advice from other more senior members here. If you get strange emails from unknown sources then you can report it here and you will get the advice you need. It is a reason why our hard working admin and mods made this forum the best site to avoid getting into trouble. You are here because you want to avoid scam and all the frustration that follows. Stick with our forum and avoid taking unneccessary risks.

RE: Unknown texter - D-izzy - 06-19-2017

Yes nj42086, exactly as nickolyko says, I could not agree more with, it really is the best advice you could start here with; to read as much as you possiably can, it truely is...I knew absolutley zilch; nothing - not even what the acronym iop really meant lol!! It's kind of embaressing now, BUT we all had to start somewhere, even the admins and senior members on here were newbies at some point on their journey...and I still have a lot to learn, and I am still learning as I like to read on here, I hope I always will as my own personal issues are gonna be with me for life...

I learnt everything I know about iops, from joining this wonderful family, and a lot more besides - they really are passionate, honest and careing people running and using this forum!  Unforunatley, a rare breed in today's world; at times!

When I first joined here(Not under my current account I had another back then, my screen name was Scaty76), this place had only been up and runnning for just over a month or so, and I was very lucky they allowed me to join when they did, as they did not know of me at all.

At the time there was another site that I had applied to join with a name very similar to this one; and thats where the similarities end!!
That other site had not activated my request to join them at that time, which was a blessing in disguise as I soon realised that all was not as it seemed with the other said site...ONLY from all the READING I did on here, did I realise just how lucky an escape I'd had! I'm sure they would of took an overly trusting, slightly green newbie like me for all they could!

I don't know how much experience you have had with iops or other forums, but on here you can trust in the other members and the admins to help you. With all kinds of problems, its not just a place to find the experiences and opinions of people getting the medication they need, be it from there own GP or otherwise. Its so much more here...People really care, friendships are made for life and its a place where others will have been or are going through the same situation you may be experiencing yourself...maybe you have been struggeling with it all on your own...You don't need to do that here, not if you so wish!

Anyway, I wish you well and hope you find all of the above and more!

BTW, I think it was the fact that WhichBlair had a text come thru on a mobile phone(not an email), and WhichBlair couldnt figure out how they got the number or risk spamming about such things using a text message!?  ...I just got a bit "mulder and scully" about it all, as it would have me worried like crazy if it happened to me!  But I overthink these things, its one of my issues lol! Wink

Takecare and see you around, nj42086!

It is all creepy-like. I'm guessing it was spoofed and automated. They knew my name which I'm not liking. The more I think of it the less I think of it. I'm going to ignore it and hope they don't start calling.

Years ago I got totally freaked out when I got a call from someone claiming to be a sheriff who said they were at my house ready to arrest me unless I paid a fine to some name through WU. Took a few minutes to cool off...he played the part really well. This was during a time when all this was much easier.

RE: Unknown texter - D-izzy - 06-20-2017

Whoa! If the police called me like that, I'd have probably never gone home again, and left the country lol! ...until I figured I'm ever-so-slightly over reacting! Wink  It amazes me what they think they can get away with!!

Seriously though, it is becoming much more of a regular thing with these cold callers and scammers!

We must get at least one a month trying to get me login on my computer and try to get me to give them remote access to it.

When im in the mood to answer an unknown number and its one of them, i'll play along and say i've been waiting for the call back for them to fix my computer and just make myself a real PITA, they end up getting real frustrated and so fed up with me they put the phone down as i'm just not worth that much trouble to them lol...

Though I think once your details have been stolen from an internet site or wherever, they just keep selling our details on and on. And we probably never even know it's happened, as i'm sure the big internet based companys keep things like that as low key as they possiably can.

But yes I think it's best to ignore that text, as they just want a reaction and they may keep playing you up if they got one.

Anyway, enjoy your day!
