suggestions on pain pills - Orange rabbit - 05-13-2016

I have chronic severe RA.  Needless to say I am always in pain.  Anyone what I can take instead of an opioid?  Is there anything similar that isn't so hard to get but still works?  Would appreciate any suggestions.  Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion Mrchuckey12. Will try. I am about out of what I have and need something. Unlike others, my physician gives me the pain pills but I'm afraid to keep taking them because you can get really hooked on them and my pain is chronic.

If anyone else has any other suggestions I am open to hearing them.

Thanks ahead of time for helping me out.

If you really want to know JamesB... I see you have sort of a chip you carry around with you, if not thats the way you present yourself...

You get several warnings, yet you are oblivious to them and deleted post get your attention?

Tey speaking to our family member here with a bit more respect and not talk down to anyone here.... That kind of behavior wil not be tolerated much longer...

Is this clear enough?

Ice

Hi Fire,
Thanks for you reply. Interesting we tried codeine but I get nauseous when I take it. (By we, I mean my physician and I ). Now tramadol is a good suggestion. I didn't know it had some AD properties.

Yes previously I was on a few of the more traditional meds. However, each one had a different effect and my liver started to take a toll. Tapered off of those because the reality is RA is all through my body. I swim almost daily and that helps, but the pain feels like my body has been constantly been beat up. I am just trying to find something that takes the edge off. I know there are many on this board who have there own stories and possibly I might find a new suggestion.

Definitely will discuss the tram suggestion with my MD. Wonder why she didn't suggest it. Thank you so much for your suggestions and information. So much appreciated.

It's not a pain pill. Perhaps you may consider if you haven't done already a coarse of TNF class drug treatments. Humira Is a newer generation standard of care and nicks the RA at its source. But has tons of side effects, cost being a huge one. I watched my mom suffer with RA and it took its toll. You have my compassion and you are strong fighter for taking on this disease. Many people give up and stop being active and it's sad. Swimming is fantastic and great exercise, I'm a huge fan of it too. Also warm soaks help with general pain.

I hope you find comfort and Health
peace,
Lil-R

First, I am so sorry that you're dealing with RA pain, Rabbit. While I do not have RA, I have an inflammatory disease that is often talked about in the same conversations as RA (Crohn's disease). A lot of the folks I've met on support boards for Crohn's have RA as well, or develop it as they get older. So, from one inflammatory disease haver to another -- F that inflammation!  Angry Tongue

I also wonder what other therapies you are on--like LilRaquel mentioned, Humira is like, some sort of miracle drug for both RA and Crohn's (and I think I've also heard it working for psoriasis as well, but I could be mistaken there). I have a friend on Humira for Crohn's, and while there are some downsides (the injection isn't pleasant, it can be a bit expensive--although, I think that really depends on insurance, and there are a slew of other side effects that go along with any drug that is high octane), she is in remission 100% right now and wouldn't trade it for the world. Granted, everyone responds differently to medications and therapies, so what works for one may not work for others.

This is all to say that I truly feel for you and hope that you are able to find some relief soon. (I also agree with LilRaquel about swimming! If you CAN move around a bit, swimming would be amazing--even if you just want to float around a little!)

Thanks for your replies everyone. I was on the RA drugs but my liver couldn't tolerate them any longer. I try to be as active as I can that is why I swim. I also have a friend with crohns and she is on Humira and I have a brother who also has an inflammatory disease called wegners. So I know all of us that suffer from any part of the inflammatory family suffer. It could be worse. One thing I also do that may help some of you is Pilates. Stretching really helps with the inflammation. I bought a reformer on hsn and set it up in the house and use that daily. For those that haven't tried Pilates it is great for inflammation. The more ones stretches the better. If I can help any of you please let me know. That's why we are here. Thanks so much.

Thanks for the suggestion and link. I'm going to try it. You guys are so helpful, and I feel so grateful to be a part of this group. I sure hope as time goes on I can help with some valuable information for someone.

So I also posted this question under Med Mar thread however because I am asking a question about pain for my RA I am asking the question here also because many of you have been helpful.

So has anyone tried the CBG salve to,relieve pain?

RE: suggestions on pain pills - Maniacomaniac - 05-21-2016

I've got degenerative, not rheumatoid. That said, my ortho surgeon put me on diclofenac. It's great. I even have a topical diclofenac gel called Voltaren. I rub it on where it hurts and I'm good to go in 5 minutes. Doesn't last long though. I do prefer the pills.

Hope this helps!
